Johnnie Walker is possibly the most well known brand and bottle in the Scotch game, so surely it does everything right?
Well what it comes to marketing they are doing everything right for their audience, which is not us hardcore whisky nerds but from the general bottle buyer to the high end blue label splasher.
So while the facts that this bottle is chill filtered and with artificial colour added gives purists shivers, it is in fact a potential selling point to their clientele. Each to their own.
Visually it is a good looking, thick glassed rectangle with a solid bottom wedge giving this bottle the unneeded extra height boost to help it stand out on the shelves. The 24 degree tiled label is pure marketing genius in creating a unique uniform across their range with the dark green really bringing this bottle together.
Straight away that cereal, malt heavy notes hit you, like the inside of a malteser chocolate flying out of a cannon with that hint of gunpowder smoke.
The colour label has certainly implanted in my brain as I get; green apples, fresh cut grass and bitter green tea.
The peat helps to tie the notes together but sadly whimpers out quite quickly damping the potential of this one smashing out of the snout.
This is the Johnnie Walker I know…
Surprising light, quite thin and certainly on the limp side. There are some flavours sloshing around like sharp lemon mixing nicely with brown sugar and a slither of stale smoke.
Each sip seems to redeem the last before swiftly mellowing out into forgettability. A hint of peppercorns… acidic apple juice… all gone within moments.
There is a creamy peat note hanging at the back which doesn’t have the power to hold these notes together sadly.
Wait this is £45 now??
So I have purchased this bottle in the past under the £30 mark which I would say is pretty good value for money when you account for the 15 year old age statement but now I think it just justifies the price point.
I still think this is the best value Johnnie Walker out there, but that doesn’t mean buy it.
