With the surge of new Irish bottles hitting the market and certainly hitting the mark, Jameson still sits proudly as the best selling Irish Whiskey brand in the world.
I feel that having these interesting explorations to the standard Jameson definitely helps to keep the crown firmly on this green glass bottle.
The story for the Stout Edition Caskmates all comes down to a chat in a bar between a person from Jameson’s and a person from a local Craft Beer Brewery. They agreed to do a used barrel swap which led to this finished bottling. While I doubt it was as low key and personal as that, it is still a nice little story for this nice little bottle.
To me, this is branding done right. Can you tell it is a bottle of Jameson? Yes. But can you also tell that this is slightly different and dare I say fancier? Yes again.
The choice of label colours deepens the Jameson brand with rich black and cream reflecting the smooth stout flavours within. The fact that it is reminiscent of Guinness is most likely not a coincidence.
Nosing this is a little bit of a challenge due to how subdued the aroma is on the first pour, so had to resort to leaving it in the glass with a lid on to stop any seeping scents escaping.
After a while, you can find a sweet mixture of green apples, buttery biscuits and a dash of spice. All in all quite standard Jameson, that is until you find the rich creamy chocolate note which engulfs all of the fresher notes.
If you have never tried the rubbing of your hands approach to nosing, it is well worth trying to get the best out of this bottle.
Jameson owes a lot to Cork’s Franciscan Well brewery as they do all the heavy lifting on the palate. The butterscotch and other classic Irish notes are flooded away with Dairy Milk drinking chocolate and creamy coffee.
You can really feel the sweet thick texture of this dram splashing against your teeth with the rich cinnamon spices floating around in this delightful wave. It stays with you for a medium length finish leaving you with the choice to have one more glass or go brush your teeth.
I not long finished this bottle but the relief of knowing it can be grabbed for less than £22 is a wonderful feeling. The cheapest tends to be on Amazon and is where I have picked up my bottles of this. For a dram that is this cheap (often falls even lower!) It is fantastic value for money and is one of my favourite Irish Whiskeys. Yeah, I said that.
I even recommended this as my Christmas Drink suggestion for New Dram Drinker’s Youtube videos.
