Named after the British clipper ship, Cutty Sark was founded in 1923 by Berry Bros. & Rudd who are well known for their independent bottlings.
Celebrating Captain William McCoy smuggling in Whisky to America in the 1920’s this small batch edition is produced in a traditional black glass bottle. This was a bottle that was purchased to be part of a Certified Originals live chat and boy am I glad I did.
The branding on this bottle is simple and remains largely unchanged since it’s release even with a charge in artist in 1955.
The Prohibition release of Cutty Sark is in celebration of Captain William McCoy who was renown for smuggling Whisky into America in the 1920’s. This “small batch” edition has been bottled in a traditional black glass bottle with a traditional cork seal. For real authenticity mine turned up looking like it may have been chewed by some stowaway.
The nose is the rich salted caramel fudge combined with what can only be described as cardboard that has been left in the rain. The more sniffing the more it has a pepper forward spice with that sweet salt note.
This continues through onto the palette with sea salted milk chocolate, orange wine gums and a sachet of grounded black pepper. It really is a cheek warming dram but nowhere near hits you like 50% should. As it fades away it leaves the taste of a well brewed green tea and salt on your lips like a day at the seafront.
While blended Whisky is often looked down upon, it is here where you can often find a real accessible price point. This is a phenomenal blend that is punching well above it’s weight. Sitting at £23 on Amazon and most online stores for a similar price this is a bottle that will be a mainstay in the collection for some time.
