Mackmyra Whisky distillery are definitely doing something right. They are eco-conscious, adventurous and put out amazing wild drams, I would recommend trying their Classic Online Tasting Set which is one of the best value for money sets out there.
Translated as “Happy hunting” or as google tells me “Hunting happiness”. This name relates more to forest foraging then to shooting any big game and this Autumnal season release from the Swedish malt masters leaves up to that name.
It is aged in American and Swedish oak casks, then is finished in ex-Swedish Berry Wine casks to produce this unique dram. This Whisky really shows how strong an influence cask finishing can be on a Whisky. At a meaty strength of 46.1% ABV and with no colouring or chill filtering it ticks all the boxes for a real good dram.
At first waft this dram has a similar aroma to spiced mulled wine from a Christmas market. Amongst the spicy booze notes there are hints of dry wood, red berries and pine needles. This is the Whisky equivalent of walking through a dense woods on a chilly autumn morning.
The nose carries on through to the taste with the spicy oak and the winter berries you would find on a festive garland. The rich, creamy taste is like brown bread completely smeared with almond butter. A really pleasant good finish that is dark chocolate and tongue warming cinnamon spice.
While Mackmyra are not known to be a budget option (apart from MACK which I hope to review soon) their price is matched by the experience each bottle offers. For the Jaktlycka it can be picked up at £59.90 from their official website or slightly cheaper on the Whisky Exchange at £55. Regardless of this bottle I would encourage anyone to buy the Virtual Tasting Set.
