Only my second experience of Teeling Whisky and so far, I have not yet been disappointed.
This sample came from the first samples box released by Pour & Sip which I would recommend as a decent subscription service. I am currently signed up to receive one box every two months which gives me enough time to enjoy the 5 drams that appear through the letter box.
With their strong branding of the Phoenix rising from the ashes and thick classic use of type it reflects the re-emergence of the Teeling Whiskey Distillery. You can see from the Teeling website that it comes in a black glass bottle similar to their small batch release which I am not a fan of hiding how much sweet nectar is inside. Teeling proudly state natural colour and don’t chill filter any of their bottlings which helps them stand out in the Irish Market.
Matured for eleven years in Bourbon barrels the Teeling single malt is and finished for extra three years in Pedro Ximenéz Sherry casks. Make sure to check out the box design that the full bottle comes in. This release is limited to ten thousand bottles.
Plums and brandy comes to the forefront of the nose with dried dates and figs appearing from the sherry influence. Very close in aroma to fruit and nut Dairy Milk chocolate.
A luscious sweet thick jam texture coating the mouth straight away on first sip. This malty note is like a bowl of chocolate shreddies floating in cream with brown sugar sprinkled on top. Finishing with dried fruits and hazelnuts this could be an entire post Christmas lunch pudding in itself.
Now this is a expensive bottle. Sitting between £80 – £90 on TWE and MoM it will certainly put a dent in any wallet. While I am not sure how limited a release the Brabazon Series is, for me it is sitting a tad too high in price and is around £15 more expensive then the mostly sold out Series 2. However I have no question as to why this bottle is award winning and if you got the cash to splash, you could get a worse Irish Whiskey at this price range.
