Now, depending on where you stand, you could have a strong argument stating that this is not Whiskey. It is produced by the Hudson River in New York and despite it not being made in Kentucky it can still technically be classed as a Bourbon. Interestingly the label states “Spirit Drink” on this sample so can only assume it is tip toeing a fine line.
This is the first distillery in New York State’s since Prohibition and is now owned by William Grants & Sons. So this liquid is in good company with the likes of Balvenie, Glenfiddich, Tullamore D.E.W. etc.
The branding is clean simple with a thick wax seal. The real standout point is how tiny the bottles are, truly are baby sized. The standard size is 35cl which is great in matching the name it does have negative effects on the Value for Money.
Produced in small 2 gallon barrels than has heavy bass speakers playing to “sonically mature” the spirit. While I don’t know the science behind agitating Whiskey during maturation, this dram has very dark and rich burgundy colour.
The 100% corn mash bill is very noticeable in the nose smelling like freshly boiled corn on the cobs excessively doused in warm margarine. It really has such a sweet, friendly aroma I found myself nosing for a few minutes.
The taste has this slightly tart wood and rye spice pleasantly laced in rich caramel apple sweetness. It ends on a very dry note familiar to drinking the remnants of an over brewed cup of green tea with ginger.
Around £32 for 35 cl it isn’t the cheapest dram going however there is something different about it which I have never really experienced before. I would recommend this bottle if found on a special offer. At time of writing it is on offer on Amazon for £24 and can also be found at Master of Malt. This dram was also covered on the Whisky and Things podcast on a Alan Rickman special episode.
